What it does

PDF to Markdown turns a PDF into clean, structured Markdown you can paste straight into a README, a wiki, a static-site generator, a note-taking app, or a large-language-model prompt. Rather than dumping a flat wall of text, it analyses the font sizes and layout of your document to reconstruct the structure — detecting headings, bullet and numbered lists, and paragraph breaks — and strips out repeating page numbers and clutter. Everything runs entirely inside your browser: your PDF is read and converted on your own device and is never uploaded to a server, so even confidential documents stay completely private. Preview the rendered result or copy the raw Markdown, toggle a horizontal rule between pages, and download a ready-to-use .md file — all free, with no sign-up. It works best on text-based PDFs (documents exported from Word, Google Docs, LaTeX, web pages and similar); scanned or image-only PDFs have no selectable text to extract, so use the Image to Text (OCR) tool for those.

How to use the PDF to Markdown

  1. Click «Choose a PDF» or drag your PDF file into the upload area.
  2. Carbide reads and converts the document in your browser, detecting headings, lists and paragraphs.
  3. Switch between the rendered Preview and the raw Markdown, and toggle page separators on or off.
  4. Copy the Markdown to your clipboard or download it as a .md file.

Frequently asked questions

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. The whole conversion runs locally in your browser using an on-device PDF engine. Your file never leaves your device, so even sensitive documents stay private.
Does it keep headings, lists and formatting?
Yes. The converter inspects font sizes and layout to reconstruct structure — headings become Markdown headings (#, ##, …), bullet and numbered lists are preserved, and paragraphs are kept intact. Complex tables and multi-column layouts may be flattened, since PDF has no reliable structural markup for them.
Why is the result empty or garbled for my scanned PDF?
Scanned or photographed PDFs are images with no selectable text, so there is nothing to extract. Run those through the Image to Text (OCR) tool first, then convert the recognised text.
What can I do with the Markdown?
Paste it into a README or wiki, import it into a static-site generator or note app like Obsidian or Notion, feed it to an AI model as clean context, or keep editing it in the Markdown Editor tool.
