What it does
Sensor Box taps into every sensor your device exposes to the browser — accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, ambient light, orientation, and more — and shows you their live readings in real time. It's the quickest way to see whether a sensor is working, to understand what data your device is broadcasting, or simply to explore the raw numbers behind how apps like compasses and spirit levels work under the hood. Each sensor panel updates continuously as you tilt, rotate, or move your device. Everything runs locally, nothing is logged or sent anywhere, no account is needed, and it works fully offline. Sensor Box is completely free as part of Carbide.
How to use the Sensor Box
- Open Sensor Box in Carbide — available sensor panels appear automatically.
- Grant any permission prompts for motion or orientation sensors if your browser asks.
- Tilt, rotate, or move your device to see the live values update in real time.
- Read the individual sensor panels — each one labels its axes and units clearly.
- Use the readings to verify a sensor is responsive or to understand what data your device exposes.
Frequently asked questions
- Why don't I see all the sensors listed?
- Sensor Box only displays sensors your device physically has and that your browser exposes. Older devices and some desktop browsers support fewer sensors than modern smartphones.
- Why does the browser ask for permission before showing motion data?
- Modern browsers (especially on iOS) require explicit user permission before granting access to motion and orientation sensors as a privacy safeguard.
- Can I use Sensor Box to test whether my gyroscope is broken?
- Yes. If you rotate your device and the gyroscope panel values don't change, that's a strong indication the sensor isn't responding. It's a quick way to diagnose the issue.
- Is any sensor data logged or sent to a server?
- No. All readings are displayed on screen in real time and are never stored or transmitted. Your sensor data stays entirely on your device.
