What is the Unlock PDF tool?

Unlock PDF removes a password from a PDF you already have the password for — a form that keeps asking for the same password every time you open it, a report you want to forward without making everyone type a code first, or an old file whose password you finally remember and want gone for good. This is not a password-cracking tool: it needs the real password to decrypt the file, exactly like opening it in any PDF reader would.

The whole process runs inside your browser. Enter the password once, and the file is decrypted entirely on-device — the password and the document itself are never uploaded anywhere, unlike most online PDF unlockers that send your file to a server to remove the encryption remotely. The result is a normal, unencrypted PDF that opens without a prompt from then on.

It works the same on a phone as on a desktop — open the page, add the protected PDF, enter its password, and download the unlocked file straight to your device.

How to use the Unlock PDF

  1. Open the password-protected PDF — drag it in or pick it from your device.
  2. Enter the file's current password when prompted.
  3. Export the unlocked PDF — decryption happens right in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
  4. Download the unlocked file — it now opens without a password.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know the password to unlock a PDF?

Yes. This tool decrypts a PDF using its real password — it is not a password-cracking or recovery tool. If you don't know the password, this tool can't remove it; you'd need to recover the password from whoever set it first.

Is it safe to unlock a PDF online?

Yes — with Carbide, decryption happens entirely in your browser, so the password you enter and the document are never sent to a server. Upload-based unlockers have to receive your file and its password to remove the encryption remotely; here nothing leaves your device.

Will the unlocked file still open password-free everywhere?

Yes. Once unlocked, the PDF's encryption is genuinely removed, so it opens normally in any PDF reader from then on, without prompting for a password again.

What's the difference between this and Protect PDF?

Unlock PDF removes a password from a file you already have the password for. Protect PDF does the reverse — it adds a new password (with real AES-256 encryption) to a file that doesn't have one yet.

Does unlocking change anything else about the file?

No. Only the encryption is removed — the pages, text, images and layout stay exactly as they were.
