What is the Ping tool?

Ping test measures the latency between your browser and any host you choose — how long a request takes to get there and back, in milliseconds. Enter a domain or server address, start the test and watch live samples arrive: current, average, minimum and maximum latency, plus jitter (how much the timing wobbles) and loss (how many requests never came back). It is a free online ping test with nothing to install, and it works just as well on your phone as on a desktop.

Latency is what makes a connection feel fast or laggy, and it is the number gamers care about most. As a rule of thumb: under 50 ms is excellent, 50–100 ms is fine for most games, 100–200 ms is noticeable, and beyond 300 ms play gets frustrating. Jitter matters just as much — a steady 80 ms often feels better than a spiky 40 ms. Run the latency test against a game server region, your VPN endpoint or your own website to see where you actually stand, and pair it with Carbide's speed test to check bandwidth alongside latency.

One honest technical note: browsers cannot send raw ICMP packets, so this tool measures latency with small timed HTTPS requests instead of the classic ICMP ping. The numbers track real-world web latency closely, though they can read slightly higher than a terminal ping. How to use the Ping

  1. Enter the host you want to ping — a website domain or a server address.
  2. Start the test and let the samples roll in — each one is a timed request to the host.
  3. Read the live numbers: current, average, minimum and maximum latency in milliseconds.
  4. Watch jitter and loss alongside them — a stable line matters as much as a low number.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good ping?

Under 50 ms is excellent — competitive gaming territory. 50–100 ms is fine for most online games and video calls, 100–200 ms is noticeable in fast games, and above 300 ms everything feels delayed. Distance matters: pinging a server on another continent adds unavoidable milliseconds no matter how good your connection is.

What is jitter and why does it matter?

Jitter is the variation between latency samples. A connection that swings between 30 and 200 ms has high jitter, and it ruins video calls and games even when the average looks fine, because packets arrive unpredictably. Low, stable jitter usually beats a lower but erratic average.

How can I lower my ping for gaming?

Use a wired ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi, pick game servers in your nearest region, close downloads and streaming on other devices, and restart your router if it has been up for weeks. If Wi-Fi is your only option, move closer to the router and prefer the 5 GHz band. A VPN rarely lowers ping — only when your ISP's routing to the server is genuinely bad.

Is this the same as the ping command in a terminal?

Not exactly. The terminal command sends ICMP packets, which browsers are not allowed to send, so this test times small HTTPS requests instead. The results track each other closely, but the browser numbers can read slightly higher because they include the HTTPS layer. For everyday latency and stability checks the difference rarely matters.

Why does my ping change between runs?

Latency reflects live conditions: network congestion at peak hours, Wi-Fi interference, other devices using the line, and load on the target server all move the numbers. That is why the test shows a rolling series of samples rather than a single figure — the pattern tells you more than any one reading.

What does packet loss mean here?

The percentage of requests that never got an answer. Occasional loss on Wi-Fi is normal; sustained loss above a few percent means an unstable link and shows up as rubber-banding in games and frozen frames in calls. If loss is high, test over ethernet to see whether Wi-Fi is the culprit.
