WHOIS Lookup
WEBLook up a domain's registrar, registration and expiry dates, status and name servers via RDAP — free in your browser.
Enter a domain and tap Look up to see its WHOIS record.
What it does
WHOIS Lookup retrieves the public registration record for any domain name via RDAP — the modern, structured successor to the old WHOIS protocol. You can instantly see who the registrar is, when the domain was first registered, when it's due to expire, its current status (active, locked, pending deletion), and which name servers it's delegated to. This is invaluable when you're considering buying a domain, investigating whether a suspicious site is newly registered, checking your own domain's expiry date before it lapses, or just researching a domain's history. The lookup runs in your browser and is completely free — no account, no download required.
How to use the WHOIS Lookup
- Open WHOIS Lookup in Carbide.
- Type the domain name you want to look up — for example carbidetools.xyz — and press Look up.
- Review the registrar name, registration date, and expiry date at the top of the results.
- Check the domain status flags to see if the domain is locked, active, or has any holds on it.
- Note the name servers listed to see where the domain's DNS is currently managed.
Frequently asked questions
- Why is the registrant's name or contact info hidden?
- Most registrars now use WHOIS Privacy (also called domain privacy protection) by default, which replaces the owner's personal contact details with proxy information. This is standard practice under GDPR and similar privacy regulations.
- What does a domain status of 'clientTransferProhibited' mean?
- It means the registrar has placed a lock on the domain that prevents it from being transferred to another registrar without the current owner explicitly requesting a transfer unlock. This is a normal security measure.
- How current is the WHOIS data shown?
- RDAP data is served directly from the registry or registrar's systems, so it reflects the current registration state. Updates after a renewal or ownership transfer typically appear within minutes to a few hours.
- Can I look up IP address ownership as well as domains?
- RDAP also covers IP address blocks and ASNs (autonomous system numbers), but this tool currently focuses on domain name lookups. For IP ownership, tools like IP Info in Carbide show the ISP associated with an IP.
