What is the Karat Converter tool?
This gold karat converter translates a weight of gold from one karat into its equivalent in every other karat — conserving the pure-gold content, which is the part that actually has value. Type a weight, choose the karat it is in now, and the table shows the same gold expressed as 24K, 22K, 21K, 18K, 14K, 12K, 10K and 9K, plus the single value they all share in your local currency at today's live rate.
The formula is simple: equivalent weight = weight × (current karat ÷ target karat). A worked example — 100 grams of 21K contains 87.5 grams of pure gold; expressed as 18K that becomes about 116.7 grams, because 18K is only 75% gold. The weight goes up as the karat goes down, but the value never changes: it is the same pure gold sitting in a different alloy.
Most karat conversion pages only flip the weight; this one also prices the result, using the live world gold rate converted to your currency — the same feed as the gold prices page. Frequently asked questions
How do I convert 21K gold to 18K?
Multiply the weight by 21 ÷ 18 (about 1.167). So 100 grams of 21K is equivalent to roughly 116.7 grams of 18K — both contain 87.5 grams of pure gold. The converter does this for every karat at once and highlights your starting row.
Does the value of gold change when converting between karats?
No. Conversion conserves the pure-gold content, and value follows pure gold — that is why the converter shows one shared value for every row. What changes in the real world is workmanship and dealer margins, not the metal value.
What is the difference between 21K and 18K gold?
Purity. 21K is 87.5% pure gold and is the trading standard in Egypt and much of the region; 18K is 75% pure, harder, and common for stone-set and European-style jewellery. Gram for gram, 21K is worth one-sixth more than 18K.
Why does the weight increase when I convert to a lower karat?
A lower karat means less gold per gram, so carrying the same pure-gold mass takes more alloy. Going from 21K to 18K, the same pure gold spreads across about 16.7% more weight; going up to 24K, the weight shrinks instead.
