The nisab is shown, not hidden: the page displays today's gold nisab (85 grams of pure gold) and silver nisab (595 grams of pure silver) in your currency and applies the lower of the two — usually the silver basis, which most charities recommend because it errs on the side of giving. Frequently asked questions
What is the nisab for zakat in grams?
The classical thresholds are 85 grams of pure gold or 595 grams of pure silver — whichever is worth less in your currency applies, and that is almost always the silver basis. Some authorities quote the silver nisab as 612 grams; this calculator uses the widely adopted 595 grams and shows both thresholds in money so you can see the difference.
Should I use the gold nisab or the silver nisab?
The calculator shows both values at today's prices and automatically applies the lower one. Most charities and scholars recommend the silver basis precisely because it is lower — more wealth qualifies, which is the safer position for the poor. If you follow an opinion that uses the gold basis, the gold threshold is displayed right next to it.
How do I calculate zakat on gold of mixed karats?
Only the pure-gold content counts, so 100 grams of 18K carries less zakat than 100 grams of 21K. The gold field takes one karat at a time — use the karat converter to express all your pieces in a single karat first, then enter the combined weight. The valuation then matches what the pure gold is actually worth.
What is the hawl — do I pay zakat every year?
Yes. Zakat falls due once your wealth has stayed at or above the nisab for one full lunar year (the hawl), and it is paid every year at 2.5% of the zakatable total. Many people fix a date — often in Ramadan — and recalculate with current prices each year.
Do I pay zakat on jewellery I wear?
Scholars differ. The Hanafi school counts all gold and silver, including jewellery in personal use; other schools exempt jewellery worn regularly within customary limits. The calculator computes either way — include or exclude the pieces according to the opinion you follow, and ask a scholar you trust if you are unsure.
Is my financial information sent anywhere?
